SHAD service users are people from all walks of life and have very diverse backgrounds. Our users are people united by their support needs and their common desire to live in the community with independence and dignity.

You have a choice - you choose who enables you plus when and where you are facilitated. 

Individual Profiles

Mary

Background Information

Mary joined SHAD in June 2000 after suffering a stroke in 1999. Prior to her illness, Mary also suffered osteo-arthritis in both knees.

Disability and Health Condition

Mary mobilises with the support of an electric wheelchair and although her osteo-arthritis condition sometimes causes a lot of pain she is generally cheerful.

Social Situation

Mary is a widow with four supportive children all of whom are married with children of their own. Mary loves to spend time in her own home with her grandchildren.

Career

Prior to her stroke, Mary worked as a senior midwife and district nurse. She also held other health related positions in hospitals and clinics.

Interests and Hobbies

Since her stroke, Mary has developed many interests and hobbies. Her main activities involve attending church services and she is a member of her church's social club. Whilst a patient in hospital Mary advocated on behalf of other stroke patients and she has written an article about her experience of disability.

Support Needs

Mary needs assistance with her personal care, domestic tasks and social activities but desires to live her life as independently as possible. Mary needs the support of volunteers in her home and to enable her to share her experience, knowledge and skills with the wider community.
